FAQs

What is ÖSD?

The ÖSD is a non-profit organization which develops internationally recognized exams for German as a foreign or second language. “ÖSD” stands for “Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch” as well as “Österreich, Schweiz, Deutschland” (Austria, Switzerland, Germany). Our exams are communicative- and pluricentric-oriented, cover all levels (A1–C2) corresponding to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and incorporate different standard variations of the German language.

Apparently we had reached a great height in the atmosphere, for the sky was a dead black, and the stars had ceased to twinkle. By the same illusion which lifts the horizon of the sea to the level of the spectator on a hillside, the sable cloud beneath was dished out, and the car seemed to float in the middle of an immense dark sphere, whose upper half was strewn with silver.

Are ÖSD Certificates Recognized?
The ÖSD language tests are recognized internationally and worldwide by many educational institutions as proof of German language skills:
  • Universities
  • Professional recognition
  • Residence permit
  • naturalization (Citizenchip)
What is the differnce between ÖSD, TELC and Goethe?
The ÖSD, telc, and Goethe-Zertifikat exams are all standardized tests designed to assess German language proficiency. While they share a similar structure—typically covering listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills—each exam has its own unique characteristics and is recognized differently depending on the context.
  • TELC (The European Language Certificates): TELC exams are internationally recognized and cater to a wide range of learners, from beginners (A1) to advanced speakers (C2). Known for their accessibility and flexibility, TELC exams are offered in many countries and are popular among people seeking certification for work, study, or immigration purposes. TELC is especially valued in Europe and recognized by many employers and educational institutions.
  • Goethe-Zertifikat: Offered by the renowned Goethe Institute, the Goethe exams are among the most prestigious and widely accepted language proficiency certificates in the world. With levels ranging from A1 to C2, these exams are well-regarded for their high standards and thorough evaluation of all aspects of language use. The Goethe-Zertifikat is often the preferred choice for academic purposes, such as university admissions in German-speaking countries, and is also highly valued by employers globally.
  • ÖSD (Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch): While similar to TELC and Goethe exams, the ÖSD is specifically focused on German as spoken in Austria. It is recognized by universities, government agencies, and employers in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. The ÖSD offers exams at various levels and is often chosen by those who plan to live or work in Austria or pursue academic studies there.
The choice of exam often depends on personal goals and needs—whether for academic purposes, professional certification, or immigration. While all three exams are widely recognized, the decision may also be influenced by the specific requirements of institutions or employers in different countries.
